Chinese EV maker targets mass market with €35,600 model across 60 nations

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer XPeng has executed its first global release of a new car model, launching the L03 across 60 countries in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific. Priced from €35,600, the vehicle is positioned as a mass-market offering designed to sell in volume, sitting below the company’s G6 model which competes directly with the Tesla Model Y. The move marks a strategic shift for the brand, which has previously entered European markets through exports of existing Chinese models rather than dedicated global launches.

The L03 is marketed globally without the 'Mona' branding used for its Chinese counterpart, with XPeng claiming specifications have been tweaked to justify the separate naming convention. The vehicle features a claimed WLTP range of 320 miles and fast charging capabilities that replenish the battery from 10 to 80 percent in 20 minutes. Standard equipment across all variants includes a 15.6-inch central screen, a 27-inch head-up display, AI-powered voice control, and a panoramic glass roof, with the company describing the package as offering value "beyond class."

Performance metrics vary by trim, with the top-tier Ultra version accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, while the Standard Range base model requires 7.5 seconds. The Ultra variant is equipped with XPeng’s Turing 7-nanometer AI chips, enabling L2++ hands-off navigation features. An over-the-air update is planned for Europe in 2027 to activate these systems, although the vehicle lacks the hardware redundancy required for L4 autonomy, limiting its self-driving capabilities to L2++ regardless of future software updates.

In a departure from many domestic rivals such as BYD, Zeekr, and Nio, XPeng has adopted a "no lidar" approach for the L03’s autonomous driving suite. The company relies on a camera-based system and high compute power, a strategy similar to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving technology. XPeng’s senior director of engineering, Xianming Liu, argues that the boosted compute power and refined camera models are sufficient to compete with lidar-powered alternatives, though the company acknowledges the vehicle will not be permitted to operate beyond L2++ skills.

The vehicle’s exterior design has drawn comparisons to the Ferrari Luce, a luxury electric vehicle designed by the agency LoveFrom. XPeng’s head of design, JuanMa López, served as Ferrari’s head of exterior design between 2010 and 2018, contributing to models including the LaFerrari and SF90 Stradale, but was not involved in the Luce project. Rafik Ferrag, XPeng’s head of creative design, stated that the goal is to achieve material fit and finish comparable to premium marques, noting that entry-level cars can now afford the technology and decorative elements previously reserved for luxury vehicles.
