Raspberry Pi bird frame pairs local audio detection with 1800s illustrations
The early-stage Fugleramme project uses BirdNET-Go to identify bird calls locally before displaying matched historic artwork on an e-ink frame or web kiosk.
A developer has showcased Fugleramme, a Raspberry Pi project that listens for bird calls and displays the detected species as historic natural-history illustrations. The early-stage project is based in Bergen, Norway, where the developer says a live installation is operating from a kitchen window.
Fugleramme uses a microphone and BirdNET-Go to classify bird sounds locally. It polls the classifier’s API, matches each detected species with an illustration, and redraws the display when the birds change.
The hardware setup includes a Raspberry Pi 5, an Inky Impression 13.3-inch e-ink panel, a microphone and an A4 frame. The same view can also be served as a network-accessible web kiosk, meaning the e-ink panel is optional and the project can run on a display connected over HDMI or on another device on the network.
The artwork collection contains more than 800 hand-cut illustrations representing over 400 species. The images are taken from real Scandinavian, British and central European natural-history plates and curated for the project. The source says none of the artwork was AI-generated, although some images were retouched with AI.
Coverage is strongest across the Nordics, the British Isles and Germany, while broader European and North American coverage is still being developed. The project’s documentation covers hardware, installation and administration, and its creator is seeking contributions.
Fugleramme was showcased through Hacker News as an early developer project. Its detection accuracy, latency, reliability and claimed real-time performance have not been independently tested or quantified.
