USC appoints Gary Patterson as defensive coordinator to bolster playoff ambitions
The 66-year-old’s hiring aims to strengthen a defence that has struggled to match the Trojans’ offensive output as the programme seeks its first College Football Playoff appearance.
USC Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley has appointed former TCU head coach Gary Patterson as the programme’s new defensive coordinator. Patterson, 66, came out of retirement in January to join the staff, bringing a résumé that includes induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and 21 seasons of head coaching experience at TCU.
The appointment follows the departure of previous defensive coordinator Lynn to Penn State. Patterson’s arrival is positioned as a strategic move to stabilise the Trojans’ defence and provide a structural counterweight to Riley’s high-scoring offensive philosophy. The hire is viewed as critical to USC’s objective of reaching the College Football Playoff for the first time in program history.
Riley, entering his fifth season in Los Angeles, cited strong institutional alignment as a key factor in the decision. He noted recent structural changes within the university, including the appointment of a new president and athletic director, the move to the Big Ten conference, and the completion of the $225 million Bloom Football Performance Center, which opened over the summer.
Patterson’s track record at TCU includes 181 wins, a .696 winning percentage, and six conference championships across Conference USA, the Mountain West, and the Big 12. His squads finished in the top nine of the final AP Poll six times between 2008 and 2017, including an undefeated 2010 season that featured a Rose Bowl victory over Wisconsin.
The hiring coincides with a period of heightened expectation for the Trojans. USC has failed to reach double-digit wins since Riley took over in 2022, and the programme recently secured the No. 1 high school recruiting class in the country. Patterson’s primary motivation for returning is to secure a national championship, a title he has not won during his two-decade tenure at TCU.
