Xavi Hernandez Appointed Netherlands Head Coach Following Koeman Exit
The 46-year-old Spaniard takes over from Ronald Koeman after the team’s round of 32 elimination at the 2026 World Cup, with the next fixture set against Germany in September.
The Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond (KNVB) has officially appointed Xavi Hernandez as the new head coach of the Netherlands national football team. The announcement, made on Wednesday, confirms the 46-year-old Spaniard as the successor to Ronald Koeman, who departed following the team’s elimination in the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup.
Hernandez becomes the first non-Dutch manager to lead the men’s Oranje side since 1978. He arrives at the federation after a period out of management, having left his role at Barcelona in May 2024. His appointment follows a search by the KNVB for a new leader after a disappointing campaign that saw the Netherlands lose to Morocco in a penalty shootout in the World Cup round of 32.
The decision aligns with Hernandez’s stated career preferences. In July, he indicated that a national team role would better suit his ambition to spend more time with his young family, noting that club management would not offer the same flexibility. He recently interviewed with KNVB officials before securing the position.
Hernandez brings a record of domestic success to the role. During his tenure at Barcelona, which began in November 2021, he won a La Liga title and a Spanish Super Cup. Prior to that, he managed Qatari club Al Sadd starting in 2019. His playing career included 133 caps for Spain, with victories in the 2010 World Cup and the European Championships in 2008 and 2012.
The Netherlands’ immediate focus will be on their upcoming UEFA Nations League fixture against Germany on 24 September. The appointment marks a significant shift in the national team’s leadership structure, bringing in a manager with extensive experience in top-tier European club football and international competition.
