FOX Sports analysts credit Pac-12 influx for Big Ten dominance
Commentators point to quarterback play and coaching changes as key factors in the Big Ten’s recent national title streak.
FOX Sports commentators Colin Cowherd and Joel Klatt have attributed the Big Ten conference’s recent dominance to the influx of offensive talent and coaching from former Pac-12 institutions. During an appearance on The Herd, the analysts argued that the addition of four former Pac-12 teams has significantly elevated the quality of quarterback play and offensive strategy within the league.
The discussion followed the Big Ten’s third consecutive national championship, with the Indiana Hoosiers identified as the current titleholders. This streak has intensified the ongoing debate regarding the superiority of the Big Ten versus the SEC. Klatt’s preseason Top 25 rankings reflect this shift, placing Oregon at number one, Ohio State at number two, and Indiana at number five. The first SEC team, Georgia, was ranked sixth, underscoring the perceived depth of the Big Ten.
Cowherd emphasised that the Big Ten already held an advantage over the Pac-12 prior to realignment, but the addition of western talent added significant flair and creativity. He highlighted the convergence of high-calibre coaches and players, specifically naming Lincoln Riley, Jedd Fisch, Jayden Maiava, Dante Moore, Nico Iamaleava, and Demond Williams Jr. as key contributors to the conference's elevated competitive level.
Klatt noted that the transformation is driven by a combination of elite signal-callers and offensive-minded coaching staffs. He pointed to Washington’s Jedd Fisch as a prime example of the strategic shift, arguing that the presence of such coaches makes the league particularly difficult to navigate for opponents on long road trips in the western division.
Specific player performances were cited as foundational to the conference's success. Dante Moore led Oregon to a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance, while Jayden Maiava was credited with leading the Big Ten in passing yards with 3,711. Klatt ranked USC at number 12 and Washington at number 20 in his preseason poll, while also noting that UCLA’s new head coach, Bob Chesney, could position the Bruins as a strong competitor alongside Iamaleava.
The analysts concluded that the depth of the Big Ten is now unmatched, with multiple teams featuring elite quarterback talent and sophisticated offensive systems. This structural change has created a league where offensive capability is widespread, reinforcing the Big Ten’s position at the top of the college football hierarchy.
