UN warns West Bank at ‘breaking point’ as Israeli raids and demolitions escalate
United Nations figures reveal 76 Palestinians killed and 3,800 displaced this year, as Israeli forces continue home demolitions and arrests in occupied territories.
Israeli forces have intensified operations in the occupied West Bank, arresting at least 23 Palestinians and demolishing multiple residential and commercial structures on Tuesday. The United Nations has warned that the situation in the territory has reached a “breaking point,” citing a sharp escalation in violence by Israeli forces and settlers as Israel prepares for its October parliamentary election.
Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, addressed the Security Council on Tuesday, stating that 76 Palestinians, including 18 children, have been killed in the West Bank this year. Approximately 3,800 Palestinians have been displaced by settler violence, demolitions, and evictions, with nearly half of those displaced being children. Alakbarov noted that the UN has documented more than 1,430 settler attacks resulting in casualties or property damage across roughly 260 Palestinian communities in 2026.
The recent raids included the demolition of the family home of Farouq Ramadan in Tal, southwest of Nablus. Ramadan was one of four Palestinians killed in a confrontation with Israeli settlers on 24 July, an incident that also resulted in the deaths of two Israelis. Israel maintains a policy of demolishing the homes of relatives of Palestinians involved in attacks against Israelis, a practice human rights groups have condemned as collective punishment.
In addition to residential demolitions, Israeli soldiers destroyed 12 commercial warehouses in Anza and bulldozed an agricultural facility in Yarza. Demolition notices were also issued for the Khallat al-Dabaa school and other structures in Masafer Yatta. According to UN figures, Israel has demolished an average of 122 Palestinian buildings every month this year. Detainees arrested on Tuesday included two children, one with a disability, and a man grazing livestock in al-Hadidiyah in the northern Jordan Valley.
Alakbarov warned that these actions are interconnected steps reshaping the occupied West Bank and advancing “de facto annexation.” Israeli authorities have advanced or approved roughly 12,360 settlement housing units across the West Bank this year, including 5,160 in occupied East Jerusalem. The Deputy Special Coordinator noted that settler attacks, once concentrated mainly in Area C, are increasingly spreading into Areas A and B, weakening Palestinian governance.
