Paul George held an introductory press conference in Boston on Tuesday, directly addressing the palpable frustration among Boston Celtics supporters following the departure of Jaylen Brown. The trade, which sent the team’s longest-tenured player to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for George and draft compensation, has marked a significant institutional shift for the franchise.
George, who will wear number 13 in reference to his “PG13” nickname, stated that he did not take the fan reaction personally. He acknowledged the historical significance of Brown, who represented the Celtics for 10 seasons and helped secure the 2024 title, noting that the fanbase’s emotional response to the transaction was understandable.
The move is part of a broader roster reconstruction as the Celtics enter a new era headlined by Jayson Tatum. George joined the team alongside veteran guard Mike Conley, who will wear number 45. Both players were introduced to the media at The Auerbach Center, signalling the front office’s intent to stabilise the squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
George’s arrival comes after a period of physical setbacks. He noted that the last few years have been challenging due to injuries but expressed confidence that he has turned a corner. His goal is to reestablish his physical form and translate that recovery into on-court performance for the organisation.
Statistically, George is preparing for his 17th NBA campaign. Last season, he averaged 17.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 steals per game across 37 appearances. In the playoffs, he recorded 16.4 points, 3.9 rebounds, and three assists per contest.
The Celtics finished the previous regular season with a 56-26 record, securing the second seed in the Eastern Conference. However, the team’s playoff run ended in the first round after they blew a 3-1 series lead to lose to the 76ers in seven games. The front office now looks to George and Conley as key components in addressing those competitive questions.
