UNC defensive coordinator Steve Belichick departs following independent culture probe
The resignation follows a university review that characterised conduct as isolated incidents rather than systemic failure, with brother Brian Belichick set to assume the playcalling role.
North Carolina defensive coordinator Steve Belichick has resigned from his position, effective 27 October, following the conclusion of an independent investigation into the culture and climate of the university’s football program. The 39-year-old, who had been on medical leave since early August, will remain on leave until his departure takes effect.
The university stated that the investigation determined "certain actions demonstrated a disregard for Carolina’s values and standards of conduct." However, the institution characterised these actions as isolated incidents rather than evidence of a systemic failure within the program. UNC noted that it now considers the investigation resolved, though it remains open to evaluating any credible new information that may emerge.
The scope of the review included former general manager Michael Lombardi, who resigned on 3 September after spending more than a month on paid administrative leave. According to WRAL, outside lawyers questioned individuals regarding alleged drug-related conduct involving Belichick and his interactions with players, although the university did not identify specific individuals or detail its findings in its official statement.
In terms of structural continuity, UNC secondary coach Brian Belichick is expected to assume the defensive playcaller role on a permanent basis. He has served in this capacity during his brother’s absence. The university did not disclose whether Steve Belichick’s departure was voluntary or directly connected to the investigation, citing its policy regarding personnel matters.
Steve Belichick was entering his second season as defensive coordinator after joining the staff in 2025. He previously coordinated Washington’s defence for one season following more than a decade on the New England Patriots’ coaching staff. His father, head coach Bill Belichick, announced the medical leave in August without providing details on the condition or a return timetable.
Despite the leadership transition, North Carolina has maintained strong defensive metrics, currently ranking 21st nationally in defensive yards allowed per play while returning only 32 per cent of its defensive snaps from the previous season.
