LeBron James has officially transferred from the Los Angeles Lakers to the Philadelphia 76ers, a move the 41-year-old described as his final decision in professional basketball. The announcement was made via social media on Friday, marking the end of an eight-year tenure with the Lakers that included a championship in 2020. James confirmed he is set to sign a two-year, $8 million contract with the Sixers, a figure significantly lower than the $53 million he earned in the previous season.
The veteran forward stated that his motivation for continuing his career is driven by a desire to compete rather than financial gain. Following his 23rd NBA season, James initially indicated he was retiring, but later clarified that he still loved the game and wished to sacrifice and work for a chance at victory. He explicitly ruled out monetary or familial reasons for the move, emphasising his intent to grind and compete for a fifth NBA championship.
James joins a Philadelphia 76ers roster that has not won an NBA title since 1983 and has not advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 2001. The team finished the previous season with a 45-37 record before being eliminated by the New York Knicks. The Sixers’ front office, led by Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment president Bob Myers, pitched the franchise as James’s best opportunity to win, with Myers appearing on agent Rich Paul’s podcast to outline their strategic position.
The new roster features a high-profile lineup including All-Stars Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, alongside Jaylen Brown, who was recently acquired from the Boston Celtics. James expressed excitement about energising a new fan base and helping to build a championship team, noting that he believes he still has more to give on the court.
This transfer marks James’s fourth NBA franchise, having previously played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Miami Heat.
