Senegal draw in Vieira debut as AFCON qualifying opens
Senegal shared a 1-1 draw with Mozambique, while Nigeria and Mali opened their campaigns with wins.
Senegal began African Cup of Nations qualifying with a 1-1 draw away to Mozambique in Patrick Vieira’s first match as coach. Nicolas Jackson put Senegal ahead in the 32nd minute, but Geny Catamo equalised in first-half stoppage time.
Senegal had more of the ball after the break in Maputo but could not break through Mozambique’s defence. Al Jazeera reported the fixture was moved from Senegal because no stadium there met international standards.
Nigeria came from behind to beat Madagascar 2-1. Ehsan Kari gave Madagascar an early lead before debutants George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor scored for Nigeria.
Mali defeated Cape Verde 3-1. Martial Tia and Dorgeles Nene put Mali ahead, Sidny Cabral briefly levelled, and Nene added a second after Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha lost possession outside his area.
