US and China agree to discuss AI incidents through bilateral channel
The White House announced the agreement after a Washington summit, alongside an extension of the countries’ trade truce until January.
The United States and China have agreed to establish a bilateral channel for communicating about artificial intelligence incidents, the White House said on Friday after a summit in Washington. Beijing had not immediately commented on the announcement.
The statement did not explain how the channel would operate, which incidents it would cover or when it would begin. It also did not establish whether the arrangement is operational or legally binding.
The summit covered AI, trade and other international issues. The White House said the two sides had also agreed to extend a trade truce due to expire in November until January, giving them more time to talk.
The leaders are due to meet again at the APEC summit in Shenzhen in November and the G20 in Miami in December. The White House described the AI channel agreement and trade truce extension; details of how either arrangement will be carried out were not provided.
