Kyiv Strike Kills 10 as Ukraine and Russia Exchange Cross-Border Attacks

Russian forces struck a military training site hosting a drone demonstration in the Bucha district on Friday, killing 10 people and injuring approximately 100 others, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack occurred in an area 20 to 30 kilometres from central Kyiv, shortly after a delegation from US arms manufacturer Raytheon visited the capital. Acting regional military administration head Ruslan Oliinyk confirmed the strike hit the grounds of a privately operated facility hosting the event.

Ukraine’s Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko condemned the bombing as a war crime, noting that the surrounding area was struck repeatedly. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted images of the destruction and rescue efforts, reiterating that interceptors for Patriot air defence systems remain a "number one priority." The timing of the strike follows a meeting between Zelenskyy and Raytheon officials on Thursday, highlighting the ongoing reliance on Western military hardware for national defence.

The Russian Defence Ministry acknowledged the use of "high-precision long-range weapons" to target the demonstration of unmanned aerial vehicles. Moscow claimed the site housed leading defence industry officials and Ukrainian military members who were "directly planning and carrying out strikes on Russian territory," alleging the drones were used to attack civilian targets within Russia.

In a separate development, Ukraine launched drone attacks on warehouses belonging to the online retail giant Wildberries in St Petersburg, the Leningrad region, and Simferopol in Crimea. Company founder Tatyana Kim confirmed the facilities were targeted, with large plumes of smoke visible over central St Petersburg. Kyiv describes these sites as logistics hubs providing components for Russian military equipment, a strategy analysts suggest aims to demonstrate that the government cannot safeguard domestic interests.

Tensions also extended to NATO airspace, where a Romanian F-16 fighter jet shot down a stray drone near Buzau County just after 11 a.m. local time. The drone entered Romanian airspace near Sulina and headed west before being neutralised over an unpopulated area. The Romanian Defence Ministry stated the incident caused no casualties or damage, continuing a pattern of stray drones encroaching on allied territory this year.

Further east, five people were reported killed in the region of Slovyansk, including an incident that EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated hit "Latvia's Honorary Consulate." Kallas announced plans to summon Russia's envoy to the EU and propose further sanctions targeting Russia's "military-industrial complex." Meanwhile, Ukraine’s energy company Ukrenergo reported damage to power plants in five regions, leaving around 150,000 people without power in the Chernihiv region.

Looking ahead, the White House confirmed that US President Donald Trump and President Zelenskyy are scheduled to hold talks next Tuesday. This diplomatic engagement comes nearly four and a half years after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, underscoring the continued geopolitical focus on the conflict.
