Georgia teen pleads guilty to murder in Apalachee High School shooting
Prosecutors secure plea deal as case highlights growing legal focus on parental liability for firearm access in US school violence
Colt Gray, aged 16, has pleaded guilty to 55 charges, including murder, in connection with the September 2024 shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia. The plea was entered in Barrow County Superior Court before Judge Nicholas Primm, who conducted a thorough inquiry to ensure the teenager understood the consequences and was acting voluntarily. Gray faces a minimum sentence of life in prison.
The attack resulted in the deaths of two students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both aged 14, and two teachers, Richard Aspinwall, aged 39, and Cristina Irimie, aged 53. Nine other individuals, comprising one teacher and eight students, were wounded in the incident. The plea comes months after the conviction of Gray’s father, Colin Gray, who was found guilty of second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter for providing the assault-style rifle used in the attack.
The case has drawn significant attention to the increasing prosecutorial focus on parental liability in school shooting incidents. Although Colin Gray was not present during the September 4 attack, investigators testified that he was aware of his son’s deteriorating mental health and volatility but failed to secure necessary intervention. Marcee Gray, Colt’s mother, had previously testified that she urged her husband to restrict their son’s access to weapons.
During the proceedings, Breanna Schermerhorn, mother of victim Mason Schermerhorn, addressed the court. She stated that she did not forgive Gray and asserted that while adults missed warning signs, the decision to commit the shooting was his alone. “Those decisions were his and his alone,” she said, noting that the tragedy robbed Mason and his community of a future.
The US maintains a high rate of school shootings, a trend often attributed to constitutional protections for the right to bear arms. According to the advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, there have been 64 school shooting incidents in the US so far this year, resulting in 24 deaths and 32 injuries. Prior to the attack, investigators discovered a shrine to Nikolas Cruz, the perpetrator of the 2018 Parkland High School shooting, in Gray’s bedroom.
