EU Civil Protection Mechanism Activated as Wildfires Displace 63,000 Across France and Spain
With over 12,500 hectares of forest destroyed in France and a national emergency declared in Spain, the European Union has deployed firefighting aircraft to assist member states grappling with merging fire fronts and critical evacuation orders.
The European Union has activated its civil protection mechanism, deploying firefighting aircraft to France and Spain as wildfires continue to displace tens of thousands of residents and destroy significant tracts of forest. The coordinated response follows requests from national governments struggling to contain blazes driven by extreme weather, including strong winds and low humidity, which have created conditions authorities describe as catastrophic.
In southwestern France, the Gironde prefecture reported that at least 44,000 people have been evacuated over the past two days as wildfires have destroyed 12,500 hectares of forest. The blaze near Arcachon Bay has consumed more than 10,000 hectares, prompting the evacuation of residents from towns including Le Porge, L猫ge-Cap-Ferret, and Andernos-les-Bains. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that France has formally requested EU assistance, with reinforcements including Croatian Canadair aircraft, Portuguese Air Tractor planes, and Czech and Slovak Black Hawk helicopters expected to arrive shortly.
Simultaneously, the Spanish government has declared a national emergency as wildfires in the Madrid region and Castile and Le贸n force the evacuation of at least 19,000 people. Two major blazes west of Madrid, one in the Madrid region and another in Castile and Le贸n, are merging into a single fire front, prompting further evacuations and raising fears of a catastrophe due to the high population density in the area. Regional president Isabel Diaz Ayuso described the situation as the worst in the region's history, noting that while the burned area might be considered less significant in rural regions, the concentration of homes and people in Madrid makes it a critical emergency.
Weather conditions remain a primary obstacle for firefighters in both countries. In France, the Gironde prefecture warned of wind gusts reaching up to 80 km/h and the potential for dry thunderstorms. In Spain, authorities cited low humidity and wind gusts above 50 km/h as key challenges. In the Var department, separate flare-ups have threatened the villages of Pontev猫s and Barjols, with evacuation notices issued for residents in certain neighbourhoods.
The scale of the disaster has prompted significant logistical and humanitarian responses. In Biscarrosse, a separate wind-fuelled fire has affected 105 homes and buildings, leading to the evacuation of 18,000 people from the town and 5,000 from a neighbouring campsite. Evacuees have been relocated to sports halls and other shelters, where they are receiving food and medical assistance. The EU has deployed four firefighting aircraft to Spain and three to France, with EU spokeswoman Anna-Kaisa Itkonen stating that officials are preparing for a severe situation while hoping to prevent further escalation.
