Android animation tweaks can make phones feel faster
Engadget says setting three animation scales to 0.5x can make the interface feel snappier, without improving the phone’s actual performance.
A change to Android’s animation settings can make everyday actions feel quicker, according to Engadget. The adjustment shortens system animations, which may make unlocking a phone, opening apps and switching between them feel more immediate.
The settings are in Developer Options: Window animation scale, Transition animation scale and Animator duration scale. Engadget recommends setting each to 0.5x, which makes most animations play twice as fast.
Developer Options is hidden by default. Engadget’s general guidance is to tap Build Number seven times in Settings, then look for Developer Options in the main settings menu or under System. Menu names and locations can vary by phone and Android version.
The change affects animation timing, not the phone’s underlying performance. Engadget cautions that shorter transitions can feel worse when apps or menus load slowly, because animations can mask brief delays. The effect may also differ between Android interfaces, which have varying animation speeds.
Engadget advises against changing unfamiliar Developer Options. It also says turning off the Developer Options toggle resets the animation scales to their defaults.
