8 fantasy football RBs to avoid based on trends
Institutional review of decade-long trends suggests high-volume players face steep production risks

A comprehensive analysis of fantasy football trends over the past decade, published by Yahoo Sports, has identified specific statistical benchmarks that managers should consider when evaluating running backs. The report advises against selecting players who exceed certain workload or age thresholds, noting that high-volume backs are prone to significant drops in production. The review focuses on full points-per-reception (PPR) formats to establish clear historical precedents for top-tier performance.

The data reveals a strong correlation between early draft selection and elite output. Of the 50 top-five running back finishes recorded over the last ten years, only four originated from players with an average draft position (ADP) of RB24 or later. Consequently, the analysis prioritises the top 23 running backs in current draft rankings, suggesting that managers who overlook early-round options risk compromising their championship prospects on platforms such as Kalshi.

Specific workload metrics highlight the risks associated with heavy usage. No player who finished in the top five over the last decade had recorded more than 381 regular-season touches in the preceding year. Christian McCaffrey is highlighted as a primary candidate to avoid, having accumulated 413 regular-season touches in 2025. This figure exceeds the highest touch total of any top-five finisher in the sample by 32, raising concerns about a potential regression similar to that experienced by Saquon Barkley.

Age and rookie status also serve as critical filters in the evaluation. No running back aged 32 or older has finished in the top five since Walter Payton’s performance in 1985. Furthermore, rookies rarely reach the elite tier, with only six achieving a top-five finish in the last decade. Najee Harris remains the most recent first-year runner to accomplish this feat, having done so in 2021.

Efficiency metrics further refine the profile of a successful fantasy running back. The analysis found that no top-five finisher averaged fewer than 0.89 fantasy points per target in the preceding season, underscoring the importance of pass-catching ability. Additionally, only three players finished in the top five after averaging less than 0.62 fantasy points per touch, indicating that efficiency is a non-negotiable trait for sustained elite performance.
