Ohio State stays No. 1 after Texas collapse in Fornelli ratings
CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli retained the Buckeyes at the top of his predictive power ratings despite their loss to Texas and a sharp fall for Oregon.
Ohio State remains No. 1 in Tom Fornelli’s Week 2 college football power ratings despite surrendering a 20-point fourth-quarter lead in its loss to Texas.
Writing for CBS Sports, Fornelli said the rankings are designed to predict future results rather than simply reflect the latest score. The ratings are analytical rankings, not an official standings system or opinion poll.
Fornelli pointed to Ohio State’s statistical advantages against Texas, including total yardage, yards per play and explosive plays. The Buckeyes also missed a 45-yard field goal with 4:16 remaining, an error he described as consequential.
The result nevertheless adds to a difficult run for Ohio State, which Fornelli said has lost three of its last four games. His decision to retain the team at No. 1 reflects his assessment of its future prospects, rather than a dismissal of the defeat.
Oregon fell sharply in the ratings after Week 2, while new teams from the Big Ten and SEC entered the top 12. The supplied rankings do not identify Oregon’s new position or the teams that moved into the expanded group.
