Walker powers Chiefs past Broncos as Mahomes marks return

Kenneth Walker III led the Kansas City Chiefs to a 31–10 victory over the Denver Broncos on Monday Night Football, delivering 191 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns in his debut for the club.

Walker had 26 touches and broke through for a 60-yard touchdown on fourth-and-inches early in the third quarter. His performance helped reduce the burden on Patrick Mahomes, who returned after surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee.

Mahomes finished with 184 passing yards and two touchdown passes, while also scoring on a 15-yard run. Kansas City’s offence did not require a perfect passing performance from its returning quarterback as Walker supplied the game’s most significant attacking impact.

Denver struggled to establish its offence. Bo Nix threw an interception on the opening drive, fumbled three times and lost one of those fumbles. The Chiefs sacked him four times, while Denver ran the ball 12 times.

Chiefs rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane made an immediate impact by intercepting Nix near midfield, setting up Kansas City’s first touchdown. Denver’s offseason emphasis on improving its running game and increasing Jaylen Waddle’s involvement produced little immediate change, with Waddle limited to one reception for two yards.

The result gave Kansas City an emphatic opening to the season, while Denver was left addressing the same offensive priorities it had identified before the game. ESPN reported that the Broncos will next face Jacksonville, while the Chiefs are scheduled to meet Indianapolis.
