The berth is the Yankees’ ninth in 10 seasons and extends the club’s run of consecutive winning seasons to 34, according to reporting from Yahoo Sports and ClutchPoints.
Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler said playoff baseball was special and that his experience from last season had left him comfortable contributing in October.
The postseason qualification gives New York another opportunity to end a championship drought by the franchise’s standards. The Yankees have won 27 World Series titles, but their most recent championship came in 2009.
New York remains 3.5 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, with 12 regular-season games remaining, the report said. Winning the division would provide a bye into the American League Division Series.
