Rams stay in NFL top five as Garrett injury clouds outlook
Yahoo Sports has kept Los Angeles among the league’s leading teams entering Week 2, but Myles Garrett’s knee surgery has put its title credentials under pressure.
The Los Angeles Rams remain in the top five of Yahoo Sports’ Week 2 NFL power rankings, despite growing questions about their prospects after defensive end Myles Garrett underwent knee surgery.
Garrett has been placed on injured reserve and is expected to miss at least four weeks. Rams coach Sean McVay has said there is no timetable for his return, leaving the length of his absence uncertain.
The injury follows Los Angeles’ 27–7 loss to the San Francisco 49ers in Melbourne. Garrett recorded no tackles in his Rams debut and said his knee was not 100 per cent, while the 49ers gained 379 yards against the Rams’ defence.
Yahoo Sports said the Rams’ status as the clear Super Bowl favourite — and possibly the favourite in the NFC West — was now in question. Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams also had poor opening games, according to the report.
The Rams face the New York Giants in Week 2 after New York opened with a win over the Dallas Cowboys. The 49ers and Giants were identified as the biggest risers in the rankings, while the Cowboys and Denver Broncos moved in the opposite direction.
The rankings are an analyst assessment rather than official NFL standings, and the source cautioned against drawing firm conclusions from one round. However, Garrett’s injury has added a significant uncertainty to Los Angeles’ early-season position.
