Vrabel flags edge protection as Patriots prepare for Steelers

New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel has identified edge protection as a central concern before Sunday’s matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers, warning that T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward can disrupt passing plays even without recording sacks.

Vrabel said Pittsburgh’s defensive front can create turnovers through strip sacks, interceptions and deflected passes. His comments, reported by Yahoo Sports from NESN, placed particular emphasis on the Steelers’ ability to affect the ball and unsettle an offence’s plans.

The warning comes after New England’s 13–10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, in which quarterback Drake Maye threw three interceptions in the fourth quarter. The Patriots will now face a defence that Vrabel said is capable of exploiting similar mistakes.

New England is also set to be without receiver A.J. Brown, who the source reports was placed on injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain. His absence leaves additional pressure on the Patriots’ protection and Maye’s passing options.

Vrabel also cautioned against underestimating Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. He said Rodgers remains capable of extending plays and completing accurate throws into tight coverage, making it important for New England to maintain pressure without losing defensive discipline.

The Patriots will host Pittsburgh at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, with kickoff listed for 1 p.m. ET on CBS. New England is seeking to avoid an 0–2 start.
