US Senator Sheldon Whitehouse has issued a scathing critique of the United States’ conduct in the conflict with Iran, describing the military campaign as being managed “incompetently and dishonestly.” The Democratic lawmaker argued that the current strategy represents a wholesale violation of President Donald Trump’s campaign promises to avoid unnecessary wars, signalling a growing fracture within the American political establishment over foreign policy direction.
In a video statement released on 26 July 2026, Whitehouse targeted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, characterising the Israeli leader as a “walking provocation” for Americans. The Senator asserted that Netanyahu has not been a good friend to the United States, suggesting that the alliance is being exploited to the detriment of American interests and diplomatic standing.
Whitehouse went further to criticise the broader conduct of the United States on the global stage. He claimed that other nations increasingly view the US as comparable to “some of the worst-behaved countries they have to deal with,” citing allegations that American diplomacy is now defined by bribe requests, side deals, personal favours, and ulterior motives.
The comments highlight a sharp divergence between the Trump administration’s actions in Iran and the rhetoric used during the previous election cycle. Whitehouse noted that voters who supported President Trump are witnessing a departure from the pledge to steer clear of unnecessary conflicts, with the US-Israel war on Iran serving as the primary example of this shift.
