Huckabee blames disinformation and ‘biblical illiteracy’ for waning US support for Israel
The ambassador’s explanation comes as a Pew poll found 60 per cent of US adults viewed Israel unfavourably.
US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee attributed declining American support for Israel to disinformation, hostility towards religious belief and a lack of biblical knowledge.
In a Thursday interview with NewsNation, Huckabee said those factors had contributed to souring views of Israel. He also rejected allegations that Israel committed genocide in Gaza or is an apartheid state, describing them as false.
The April Pew Research poll cited by Al Jazeera found 60 per cent of US adults viewed Israel unfavourably. By contrast, 65 per cent of white evangelicals viewed Israel favourably.
A July AP-NORC poll reportedly found more Americans believed Israel had committed genocide in Gaza than disagreed, while about half said they did not know enough to answer.
The polling records public views at the time of each survey; it does not establish why opinion has shifted. Huckabee’s explanation and his rejection of the allegations are his stated positions.
