US reset under Pochettino opens with 4–1 win over Peru
Eleven uncapped players made their debuts as the United States began a new phase following its World Cup round-of-16 exit.
The United States men’s national team beat Peru 4–1 in Orlando in Mauricio Pochettino’s first match of the new phase described by CBS Sports. The result followed the US exit from the World Cup at the round-of-16 stage.
Justin Ellis, Julian Hall and Malik Tillman scored for the US, while Gianluca Lapadula scored for Peru. Ellis opened the scoring after Gio Reyna set him up, according to CBS Sports.
Eleven of the 13 uncapped players called into camp made their international debuts. Cavan Sullivan, 16, became the second-youngest player to appear for the US national team, the report said.
Sebastian Berhalter contributed a goal and an assist. The report also noted that Brian Schwake and Cole Campbell were the two uncapped players called up who did not appear.
The match began a run of fixtures against Chile, Mexico and Canada, which CBS Sports said remained ahead for the US during the extended break.
