Storm expected to strengthen following development south-east of Japan

Typhoon 13 formed in the Pacific Ocean on the afternoon of 27 July 2026, situated far to the south-east of Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) confirmed the development of the system and has advised the public to pay close attention to future information regarding the storm’s progression.

According to the agency, the typhoon is expected to strengthen in the near future. The JMA has not yet provided specific data regarding the storm’s trajectory or potential landfall locations, noting that forecasts regarding intensity and path remain subject to change as the system develops.

The formation of Typhoon 13 is distinct from other recent weather events affecting the region. Earlier in July, the JMA issued heavy rain warnings for Niigata Prefecture, including a “Recorded Short-Duration Heavy Rain” warning for areas near Itoigawa City. Level 4 Heavy Rain Warnings remained in effect for Nagaoka City, Kashiwazaki City, and Kariwa Village as of midnight on 27 July 2026.

This current advisory also differs from the tsunami advisories issued in June 2026 following a magnitude 8.2 earthquake, which prompted evacuation orders in coastal areas from Ibaraki to Okinawa Prefecture. The JMA continues to monitor the developing typhoon separately from these prior incidents.

The agency has directed the public to access real-time updates through its news and disaster prevention applications. Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant as the storm moves through the Pacific, with the JMA indicating that further information on the typhoon’s strength and direction will be released as it becomes available.
