The pitching duel features left-handed starters Framber Valdez for Detroit and Foster Griffin for Cleveland. Valdez, with a 7-7 record and a 4.17 ERA, has shown signs of returning to form following a difficult outing against the Chicago Cubs on July 21. Over his last three starts, Valdez has allowed only four earned runs across 19 innings, delivering back-to-back seven-inning performances that suggest a return to his role as a key acquisition for the Tigers.
Griffin, acquired by Cleveland from the Washington Nationals at the trade deadline, enters the game with a 12-4 record and a 3.31 ERA.
