Formula 1 expands 2027 Sprint calendar to 10 events, with Monaco included

Formula 1 has scheduled a record-equalling 24-race calendar for 2027, with Sprint weekends increasing from six to 10. Monaco will host a Sprint for the first time, joining four other new venues for the format: Bahrain, Australia, Japan and Abu Dhabi.

The Sprint format includes an additional qualifying session and a 100-kilometre race, with points awarded to the top eight finishers. Formula 1 says television audiences are 12 per cent higher on Sprint weekends than on standard weekends. The format is expected to remain unchanged in 2027.

Bahrain is scheduled to host the opening round and Sprint weekend from 12 to 14 March, after four days of pre-season testing at the Sakhir circuit from 24 to 27 February. Abu Dhabi will stage the closing Sprint weekend from 10 to 12 December, with Qatar immediately preceding it.

The inclusion of Monaco places a Sprint at a circuit where overtaking is difficult and qualifying has traditionally been central to the weekend. The event will have two grid-setting sessions, while teams will have one practice session instead of the usual three.

The four Middle Eastern rounds remain on the 2027 schedule, although the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian events are subject to uncertainty linked to the continuing conflict in the region. Formula 1 has also planned a five-week summer break.

Portugal and Turkey are scheduled to return, with Portugal’s Portimão circuit taking Barcelona-Catalunya’s June slot. Barcelona-Catalunya will begin a rotation with Belgium and return in 2028, while the Dutch Grand Prix is absent after its deal ended, according to Sky Sports.
