Tielemans issues apology to Aston Villa supporters over Manchester United comparison

Youri Tielemans has formally apologised to Aston Villa supporters for remarks made during Manchester United’s pre-season tour, where he indicated that United is a “bigger club” than the Midlands side. The Belgium international clarified on Instagram that he did not intend to offend the institution he represented for three years, admitting his choice of words was a mistake.

Tielemans, 29, moved to Old Trafford this summer on a five-year deal after United triggered a £35m release clause in his contract. He spent three years at Villa Park after joining from Leicester City in 2023, making 134 appearances and scoring 10 goals. Speaking during United’s tour, he praised Villa for helping him return to his “best level” before stating that there are clubs above Villa, with Manchester United being one of them.

The comments drew dissatisfaction from some Villa supporters, prompting the midfielder to address the issue directly on social media. “Never meant for my words in the press yesterday to offend anyone or the institution of Aston Villa Football Club, which I massively respect and I’m grateful for the past 3 years,” he wrote. He added that he must admit his mistake and apologise for his choice of words, promising to be more careful in the future.

Tielemans signed for United until 2031, describing the move as the “culmination of years of dedication” and stating that joining such a special club feels incredible. The Belgium international, capped 90 times, helped his country reach the quarter-finals of the World Cup this summer. Last season, he suffered separate calf and ankle problems that restricted him to 35 appearances in all competitions for Villa, the lowest number in a campaign during his time in England.

United are set to face AC Milan and Villa will face Borussia Monchengladbach in their final pre-season games on Saturday. The new Premier League campaign begins next weekend, with both clubs looking to settle into their new structures following the summer transfer window.
