Tielemans completes £35m Manchester United move, citing club hierarchy and 'natural' link with Fernandes

Manchester United have secured the services of Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa in a deal worth £35 million. The 29-year-old triggered a release clause in July to complete a five-year contract, marking his third attempt to join the club after earlier interests in 2019 and 2022 failed to materialise.

Tielemans provided his first extended interview since the transfer, describing the move as a "dream" and acknowledging the structural difference between the two institutions. While he stated he "owes the world" to Aston Villa for helping restore his performance levels, he conceded that Manchester United occupies a higher position in the football hierarchy.

The midfielder’s arrival follows a brief stint with the national team, where he withdrew from Belgium’s World Cup quarter-final against Spain due to physical overload. Tielemans attributed the withdrawal to an excessive schedule, citing the physical toll of playing 120 minutes against Senegal followed by matches against the United States and Spain within a short window.

Under head coach Michael Carrick, Tielemans is expected to operate with significant freedom to organise the team’s structure. The Belgian midfielder noted that Carrick’s approach is logical, focusing on ball retention and specific pressing patterns, despite potential differences from his previous tactical experiences. Senior officials observed a developing partnership between Tielemans and captain Bruno Fernandes during a recent friendly against Paris Saint-Germain.

Integration into the squad has been facilitated by former teammates, including Jonny Evans and Marcus Rashford. Evans provided a character reference to Carrick, while Tielemans praised Rashford’s humility and work ethic during their time together at Aston Villa, noting the striker’s return to his boyhood club.
