An Israeli air attack struck an apartment in the al-Asala building in Gaza City’s Remal neighbourhood early on Saturday, killing at least five people and severely wounding at least six, according to staff at al-Shifa Hospital.

Al Jazeera’s reporter said the strike came without warning while residents were asleep. The reported circumstances have not been independently verified in the source package.

Al Jazeera reported that the attack damaged floors below the targeted apartment in the multi-storey building. Fires burned for at least an hour before Palestinian Civil Defence crews extinguished them.

Crews were still searching the rubble for missing people and bodies, according to the reporter. The reported death toll may change as the search continues.

Al-Shifa Hospital said four of those killed were women, including an elderly Christian woman and her daughter. The six wounded were taken to the hospital.

Remal was described in the report as one of Gaza City’s most crowded residential areas, with displaced people sheltering in makeshift camps across the neighbourhood.
