Sandy Alcantara records first career save for Marlins
Miami’s ace threw 13 pitches in the ninth inning of a 4–3 win over Arizona, two days after a 101-pitch start.
Sandy Alcantara recorded the first save of his MLB career as the Miami Marlins defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 4–3, entering in the ninth inning after throwing 101 pitches in a start against Arizona two days earlier.
The right-hander threw 13 pitches and allowed a two-out walk to Lars Nootbaar. The game ended when pinch runner Jordan Lawlar was caught stealing second base, with video review confirming the call.
According to Yahoo Sports, the appearance came after Alcantara reportedly offered to help a depleted Miami bullpen. The Marlins had used seven relievers in an 11-inning win the previous day and had lost closer Pete Fairbanks to the injured list.
The outing was Alcantara’s first relief appearance since his rookie season with the St Louis Cardinals in 2017. He returned from Tommy John surgery in October 2023 and leads MLB this season in starts, innings pitched and pitches thrown, with 32 starts, 205 innings and 3,161 pitches, according to the source.
Manager Clayton McCullough reportedly said Alcantara remained scheduled to start against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. Miami was 76–77 and 7.5 games out of a wild-card spot after the win.
