Raiola accepts backup role as Oregon’s quarterback depth solidifies

Quarterback Dylan Raiola has embraced a backup role at Oregon, acknowledging that he is entering the 2026 season without the starting position he has held throughout his career. The former Nebraska player committed to the Ducks via the transfer portal in early January, a decision made two days before starting quarterback Dante Moore announced his intention to return to school.
During Oregon’s on-campus media day in early August, Raiola addressed the shift in his status. When asked when he last entered a season as a non-starter, Raiola noted that it had not previously occurred. He described the situation as a new challenge but expressed willingness to sacrifice for the team’s greater good, viewing the arrangement as a chance to observe and learn from a high-level performer.
The decision to retain Moore as the starter was driven by the Heisman Trophy candidate’s choice to forgo the NFL Draft, where he was projected as a top-10 selection. Moore’s announcement on 14 January prompted a celebratory reaction from head coach Dan Lanning, who jumped on a desk in the room. This move secures Moore’s status as the unquestioned starter for the upcoming campaign.
Raiola’s camp reportedly felt comfortable with the potential backup scenario, citing Moore’s own trajectory as a precedent. Moore joined Oregon after his freshman season at UCLA, a period during which he benefited from a similar developmental environment. That experience is now mirrored in Raiola’s position, with the former five-star recruit expected to spend the season in a supporting role.
The institutional continuity between the two quarterbacks is notable. Moore, who was the No. 2 overall recruit in the 2023 cycle, originally committed to Oregon before decommitting. His return to the program after his time at UCLA established a precedent for transfer integration that Raiola is now following.
Oregon is scheduled to open its season against Boise State on Saturday. With Moore poised to start and Raiola in reserve, the Ducks enter the contest with a settled quarterback hierarchy, a factor that may influence their approach in the early stages of the season.
