Cowboys’ revamped defence exposed in 28–20 loss to Giants
Dallas’ new defensive system struggled to contain short gains and generate pressure in Christian Parker’s first game as coordinator.
The Dallas Cowboys’ revamped defence opened the season with a 28–20 loss to the New York Giants, raising early questions about how quickly the unit can adapt to a new system under defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
CBS Sports reported that Dallas recorded the NFL’s worst defensive success rate in Week 1. The Cowboys avoided allowing a play of 25 or more yards, but conceded 29 gains of between five and 15 yards, allowing the Giants to sustain possessions through repeated short completions.
The clearest breakdown came during a 13-play, 65-yard Giants scoring drive. Devin Singletary caught three short passes in four plays, gaining 13 yards, seven yards and a nine-yard touchdown that went untouched.
Dallas also struggled to affect the quarterback. No defender recorded more than two pressures, although Caleb Downs had a sack and Donovan Ezeiruaku contributed half a sack and two quarterback hits. The Cowboys forced four fumbles but recovered only one.
Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team had been “humbled” and linked some of the defensive failures to youth and unfamiliarity with the scheme. Dallas entered the season having added first-round defenders Downs and Malachi Lawrence, several veterans and an extension for defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
The performance does not establish whether the problems will persist, but it underscored the adjustment facing a defence combining young players, new personnel and a new coordinator. Schottenheimer said he was not pressing the panic button and believed the Cowboys were better than their opening display.
