Under first-year manager Craig Stammen, the club is on track for a third consecutive postseason appearance, having climbed six spots in the standings since their low point in late July.
San Diego’s resurgence has been driven primarily by a high-leverage bullpen anchored by closer Mason Miller. While the starting rotation has struggled, ranking 18th in MLB in starter ERA since July 24, the team has compensated through bullpen depth and strategic usage of Adrián Morejón in multi-inning bridge roles. This approach has allowed Stammen to preserve the bullpen for high-leverage situations, contributing to a run differential that exceeds their underlying metrics.
Offensive production has also stabilised, with core hitters Fernando Tatis Jr and Jackson Merrill returning to form after a disappointing start to the 2026 season. Their improved output has helped offset a season-long slump for Manny Machado, whose batted-ball metrics suggest he has been unlucky at the plate. The team has also seen modest improvements in overall production and performance with runners in scoring position.
Roster adjustments made ahead of the trade deadline have added depth to the rotation, with the acquisitions of Casey Mize and Robbie Ray. Right-hander Joe Musgrove is currently rehabilitating from Tommy John surgery, while the status of Nick Pivetta and Lucas Giolito remains uncertain. Despite these challenges, the front office’s moves have provided a foundation for the current surge.
The Padres now face a congested race for the final two wild-card berths, competing against the Diamondbacks, Phillies, Marlins, and Cardinals. With MLB eliminating tiebreaker games, seeding and berths are determined by head-to-head records. San Diego would lose tiebreakers to the Phillies and Cardinals, making upcoming series against Arizona and Miami critical for securing their playoff position.
