Garry Defiant as Makhachev Targets Historic Streak at UFC 330

Ian Machado Garry has declared his absolute certainty of defeating Islam Makhachev for the UFC welterweight title, framing his upcoming bout at UFC 330 as a matter of destiny rather than mere sporting competition. The Irish fighter, currently ranked number one in the division, stated he has "seen it in his dreams" and believes his path to victory was established before his birth. This conviction persists despite Garry being a 3-to-1 betting underdog against the pound-for-pound king.

The main event is scheduled for Saturday, 15 August 2026, at the Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia. Garry, 28, described maintaining a "visceral level of peace" during media preparations, rejecting the pressure of the odds. He emphasised that his confidence is rooted in his ability to control only what he can, asserting that his identity as a fighter remains intact regardless of the outcome.

A significant portion of Garry’s preparation has focused on neutralising Makhachev’s grappling dominance. After training under Demian Maia at the Chute Boxe Academy in Brazil, Garry highlighted his improved ground defence, citing a recent victory over Belal Muhammad where he successfully stuffed every takedown attempt. He argued that Makhachev must first overcome his striking to engage in a wrestling match, claiming he can "hit him hard" if the champion attempts to close the distance.

Makhachev, aiming to extend his winning streak to 17 victories and surpass Anderson Silva’s record, remained dismissive of Garry’s training camp adjustments. The champion asserted that improvements cannot be measured until inside the Octagon, stating that Garry has never faced an opponent with his specific skill set. Makhachev pointed to his previous performance against Jack Della Maddalena, where he secured 19 minutes of ground control, as evidence of his ability to dominate fights on the mat.

Garry also addressed the public controversy surrounding his personal life, including criticism of his marriage and comments regarding women in leadership. He stated that he filters out online negativity to focus on his family and training, noting that he has faced mockery from fellow fighters such as Sean O’Malley and Colby Covington. Garry maintained that his priority is his role as a father and husband, treating all external noise as irrelevant to his mission.
