Ole Miss and SMU deploy high-cost digital strategies for 2026 Heisman campaigns
Institutional marketing efforts have shifted from traditional media mailings to multi-million dollar digital takeovers in New York and Las Vegas, with Ole Miss spending an estimated $750,000 to promote its contenders.

Ole Miss and SMU have launched aggressive preseason marketing campaigns for their Heisman Trophy contenders ahead of the 2026 college football season, marking a significant escalation in institutional expenditure and digital visibility. According to ESPN, these modern efforts represent an evolution of historical hype strategies, utilising large-scale public displays and social media to build national awareness.
Ole Miss is promoting quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy through a two-week residency in New York City’s Times Square and a partial takeover of the Las Vegas Sphere. The campaign features 96-foot-tall digital billboards in the Manhattan intersection, with the Sphere campaign set to run through Saturday. Industry sources estimate that the university spent between $600,000 and $750,000 on these specific installations, a figure the university and its advertising agency declined to confirm directly.
In Dallas, SMU is supporting quarterback Kevin Jennings with a “K7NG OF DALLAS” initiative. The campaign includes a prominent billboard featuring the tagline “The K7NG RETURNS” and branding efforts tied to a new athletic recovery centre. In an unprecedented honour for a current student-athlete, the Mustangs announced that this future facility within the football complex will be named after Jennings.
These contemporary initiatives contrast with the historical methods used to secure national media attention. Previous campaigns relied on mailed statistics in the 1960s, primitive websites in the 1990s, and social media in the 2010s. The 2026 approach leverages the immediate reach of digital platforms, allowing institutions to convert physical billboards into shareable content for a global audience.
The strategic focus extends beyond individual players to the broader brand equity of the institutions. Ole Miss officials stated that the goal was to place the university at the forefront of college athletics, while SMU integrated its campaign with a $150 million campus renovation. Both programs are leveraging administrative resources to manage complex branding elements, from social media engagement to physical infrastructure.
As the 92nd Heisman Trophy ceremony is scheduled for 12 December, the success of these early campaigns will ultimately depend on on-field performance. While digital engagement metrics, such as the approximately 21,100 likes generated by Ole Miss’s Sphere video, provide immediate feedback, the traditional voting process remains the final arbiter of the award.
