When Does the 2026-27 NBA Season Start? Opening Night Schedule
League’s 81st regular season begins October 20 with high-profile matchups across three time zones

The National Basketball Association’s 81st regular season is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, with an Opening Night tripleheader. The league has confirmed that the 2026-27 campaign will run through Sunday, 11 April 2027, with each of the 30 teams set to play 82 regular-season games.

The opening slate features three distinct matchups designed to highlight the previous season’s top performers. The Boston Celtics will travel to Detroit to face the Pistons in the first game of the season. This afternoon start pits the two teams that recorded the best records in the Eastern Conference during the 2025-26 regular season against each other.

In New York, the defending NBA champion Knicks will host the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden. Prior to the tip-off, New York is scheduled to raise its 2025-26 championship banner, marking the conclusion of their title defence.

The Opening Night tripleheader concludes in San Antonio, where the Oklahoma City Thunder will play the Spurs. This fixture serves as a rematch of the 2026 Western Conference Finals, setting an early tone for the conference’s competitive landscape.

Under the league’s scheduling structure, each team is initially assigned 80 games. The remaining two matchups for every club will be determined based on the results of the NBA Cup Group Play, adding a layer of administrative complexity to the final fixture list.

The regular season is set to conclude on 11 April 2027, with all 30 teams in action. The league has structured the final day’s start times to manage broadcast windows, with Eastern Conference games and one cross-conference match beginning at 6 p.m. ET, while Western Conference games will tip off at 8:30 p.m. ET.

The 2026-27 season follows a period of heightened security protocols within the league. Following an incident during Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals at the Frost Bank Center, where a fan stormed the court to take a selfie with Spurs player Victor Wembanyama, the NBA confirmed that two individuals involved in the disruption have been issued lifetime bans from all arenas.
