MLB approves sale of San Diego Padres to José E. Feliciano and Kwanza Jones
Investor group led by Clearlake Capital co-founder clears final regulatory hurdle; transaction to close in coming weeks

Major League Baseball team owners have unanimously approved the sale of the San Diego Padres to an investor group led by private equity billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife, Kwanza Jones. The decision follows a formal vote announced on Monday, concluding a process that began with an agreement reached in May to purchase the club from the family of the late Peter Seidler.

The transaction carries a valuation of $3.9 billion, establishing a new record for Major League Baseball. The sale remains contingent upon the official closing of the deal, which is expected to occur in the coming weeks. The approval marks the culmination of a competitive bidding process in which Feliciano, the 53-year-old co-founder of Santa Monica-based private equity firm Clearlake Capital, emerged as the Seidler family’s preferred candidate.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred issued a statement endorsing the new ownership structure, emphasising the strategic importance of the franchise within the league’s broader governance framework. “José and Kwanza understand the unique place the Padres hold in San Diego and the powerful bond between the club and its fans,” Manfred said. “We look forward to their leadership of the Padres and to working with them to build on the club’s strong foundation in a market that is so important to Major League Baseball.”

The transition of control follows a period of uncertainty for the franchise. The Seidler family announced its intention to explore a sale last November, two years after Peter Seidler’s death. Seidler had assumed majority control of the Padres in 2020, having initially joined the ownership group in 2018. The new owners have committed to maintaining operational continuity, with MLB confirming that Padres CEO Erik Greupner and general manager A.J. Preller will remain in charge of day-to-day operations.

In a joint statement, Jones and Feliciano outlined their strategic vision for the organisation, framing the acquisition as a commitment to long-term institutional stability. “We are a family first, and becoming owners of the San Diego Padres means joining an even larger one,” they said. “Our ambition is clear: to bring a World Series championship to San Diego and build an enduring organization capable of competing for championships year after year.” The statement further noted their intent to invest “ambitiously and thoughtfully” in the club’s future while working alongside existing personnel.
