McLaren’s Norris claims Hungarian pole as Hamilton penalty disrupts grid

Lando Norris has secured his first pole position of the 2026 Formula One season at the Hungarian Grand Prix, driving for McLaren. The result marks a significant shift in momentum for the team, which has struggled under the new regulatory framework since the start of the year. Norris, who previously won the drivers’ championship in 2025, expressed caution regarding his prospects for the race, noting the historical difficulty of overtaking at the Hungaroring and the strong race pace displayed by rivals Ferrari and Mercedes during Friday practice.

His teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was set to form an all-British front row, was demoted three places on the grid after being penalised for impeding fellow McLaren driver Oscar Piastri during qualifying. Hamilton described the incident as part of a weekend that had "fallen apart," citing a string of penalties over recent races in Britain and Belgium. The seven-time world champion acknowledged the difficulty of maintaining positivity after three consecutive grid penalties, though he remained hopeful that the team’s underlying pace would yield results in the race.

McLaren’s performance was bolstered by an upgrade package introduced this weekend, described by team principal Andrea Stella as an "overachievement" relative to expectations. The team had faced challenges with aerodynamic philosophy and the operation of the Mercedes engine, which they do not manufacture. Stella noted that while Ferrari entered the event as favourites due to their superior cornering speed, McLaren’s effective qualifying execution and Ferrari’s under-performance contributed to Norris’ pole position.

Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso qualified 16th for Aston Martin, marking the team’s first time progressing beyond the first qualifying session of the season. The result follows a significant car upgrade that has revitalised the team’s development momentum after a difficult start to the 2026 campaign, which was hampered by a late design start and underperformance from engine partner Honda. Alonso stated that the upgrade had changed the momentum within the factory, providing clarity on development targets for the remainder of the season.

The Hungarian Grand Prix serves as the final race before the summer break, with the next event scheduled to be the Bahrain Grand Prix. Norris referenced a strategic error in Miami earlier in the season, where caution regarding potential rain allowed Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli to win, and expressed a desire to make amends in Hungary. As the field prepares for the race, the focus remains on whether McLaren can convert their qualifying success into a victory against the strong race pace of their competitors.
