Marlins’ historic triple play fails to halt losing streak against Astros
Miami’s first triple play since 2002 cannot overcome early deficit as team’s record drops to 52-50
The Miami Marlins executed their first triple play in franchise history since 2002 during a contest against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park on Tuesday night, yet the defensive milestone proved insufficient to alter the outcome of the game. Despite the rarity of the fielding achievement, the Astros secured a 5-3 victory, extending Miami’s losing streak to eight consecutive games.
The triple play occurred in the eighth inning when Jose Altuve grounded into a fielder's choice after singles by Yordan Álvarez and Isaac Paredes had put runners on base. The play marked only the second triple play in Marlins history and the first surrendered by the Astros since 2019, according to reporting by Sarah Langs and Chandler Rome. However, the defensive stand arrived with only one inning remaining, failing to erase the deficit established earlier in the contest.
Houston established an early lead through a combination of power and timely hitting. Jeremy Peña opened the game with a leadoff home run, followed by an RBI double from Lucas Spence in the second inning. The Astros extended their advantage in the fifth inning with a home run from Isaac Paredes, building a margin that Miami could not overcome despite the late defensive heroics.
Javier Sanoja hit a ground-rule double to open the ninth inning, but the Astros’ bullpen secured three quick outs to preserve the win. The result dropped the Marlins’ season record to 52-50, while Houston improved to 49-54, moving into third place in the American League West division.
The loss continues a difficult period for Miami, which has been swept in back-to-back series prior to this contest and has lost eight straight games dating back before the All-Star break. The three-game series against Houston concludes on Wednesday night, with the Marlins seeking to break their current skid.
