French President Emmanuel Macron chairs emergency talks as uncontrolled fires force mass evacuations across the south-west, with early indications that the largest blaze may be losing momentum.
French President Emmanuel Macron convened a crisis cabinet meeting on Monday to address the escalating wildfire emergency that has displaced more than 250,000 people. The gathering follows the rapid expansion of uncontrolled blazes in the south-western region, which have now encroached to within approximately 15km of the city of Bordeaux.
The situation in the Gironde department has deteriorated significantly, prompting the mobilisation of military resources to assist containment efforts. Prime Minister Sebastian Lecornu has also chaired a government crisis meeting regarding the emergency, signalling the high level of institutional concern as the fires threaten major population centres.
While earlier reports indicated that over 110,000 residents had been evacuated and 14,000 hectares of forest destroyed, the total number of people forced to flee their homes has risen sharply. A fire north of Arcachon Bay alone has destroyed more than 12,500 hectares, contributing to the surge in displacement figures.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez has confirmed the updated evacuation numbers and pledged to protect Bordeaux from the encroaching flames. The government’s response has shifted from initial containment strategies to active defence of urban areas as the fire fronts continue to advance.
There are early signs that the spread of the largest fire may have slowed, offering a first glimmer of hope amidst the crisis. However, officials caution that these developments are preliminary and do not yet indicate full containment of the blazes.
Concurrently, a national emergency has been declared in Spain as two major wildfires west of Madrid merged into a single blaze. This development has forced the evacuation of more than 19,000 residents, highlighting the broader regional impact of the extreme weather conditions affecting southern Europe.
The French government remains focused on coordinating the response across affected departments, with the military playing a central role in supporting civilian fire services. The outcome of Monday’s crisis meeting will likely determine the next phase of the state’s intervention strategy.
