Laxman urges India to maintain discipline ahead of Zimbabwe series finale
Following a 90-run victory over Zimbabwe at the Harare Sports Club, VVS Laxman has cautioned Team India against complacency as they prepare for the final T20I on Sunday.
India has secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe, following a commanding 90-run victory in the second match at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday. The win marks a significant turnaround for the Indian side, which had previously suffered series defeats against Ireland (0-2) and England (0-4). India now aims to complete a 3-0 clean sweep in the final match scheduled for Sunday.
Despite the convincing result, head coach VVS Laxman addressed the squad with a focus on governance of mindset rather than celebration. In a video message shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Laxman instructed players to extract confidence from their performances without allowing comfort to set in. He emphasised that the team must remain grounded and avoid complacency as they approach the decisive encounter.
Laxman highlighted the strategic importance of the team’s batting structure, particularly the aggressive opening partnership between Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma. He noted that their approach set the tone for the innings, providing a solid foundation before the middle order took control.
The coach also praised the stabilising efforts of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan after India lost two early wickets. Laxman described their partnership as crucial, noting the calmness and experience displayed by the pair in applying pressure to the Zimbabwean bowlers. He observed that by the end of the 10th over, the team had reached 95 runs without taking excessive risks, demonstrating positive intent.
Finishing the innings effectively was another key area of focus for Laxman. He commended the contributions of Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Shivam Dube for posting a match-winning total. Laxman specifically noted the aggression and intent shown by Varma during his partnership with Kishan, as well as Dube’s support, which helped secure the dominant margin of victory.
Fielding intensity was equally critical to the team’s success. Laxman stated that every player put their body on the line to save runs, reflecting the desired attitude within the group. He emphasised that maintaining the same level of intensity on the field as seen in the first game was essential, with each member of the squad contributing to restricting the opposition.
The series victory serves as a corrective measure for India after recent setbacks. With the final match on Sunday, the team is expected to carry forward the discipline and tactical awareness highlighted by Laxman. The focus remains on sustaining performance levels rather than resting on the laurels of the 2-0 lead.
