Angels Get Much-Needed 'Fresh Start' As Arte Moreno Plans Sale To Stan Kroenke
SPORT BUSINESS

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno is set to sell a controlling interest in the franchise to Stan Kroenke for a reported $4 billion, a figure that would establish a new record for Major League Baseball. The transaction, which is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, remains subject to approval from MLB. Moreno, who acquired the club in 2003 for $183.5 million, will retain a minority stake in the organisation.

The sale comes after the Angels endured their 11th consecutive losing season, a period characterised by limited postseason success. Since 2010, the team has reached the playoffs only once, in 2013, when they were swept in the American League Division Series. The franchise’s lease at Angel Stadium in Anaheim runs through 2032, providing a stable operational base for the incoming ownership group.

Kroenke, who owns the Los Angeles Rams, is bringing a substantial portfolio to the table through his holding company, Kroenke Sports & Entertainment (KSE). The company also holds stakes in the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche, Arsenal F.C., and the Colorado Rapids. Under KSE’s ownership, the Rams, Nuggets, Avalanche, and Arsenal have all secured championships since 2022, a track record that has drawn positive attention from Angels personnel.

Players within the Angels organisation have expressed optimism regarding the potential for improved infrastructure and support. Mike Trout described the move as a "fresh start," noting that the team is excited about the prospect of a new direction. Trout and teammate Zach Neto reportedly contacted Rams players to gauge their experience under Kroenke, receiving encouraging feedback regarding clubhouse amenities and the owner’s willingness to address player needs.

The Rams themselves have demonstrated significant success under Kroenke’s stewardship, having made the playoffs seven times in the last nine years. The team relocated from St. Louis to Los Angeles in 2016 and won the Super Bowl in 2021. This recent history of organisational stability and on-field success is expected to influence the Angels’ approach to rebuilding their own competitive standing.

While the $4 billion price tag is a reported figure rather than an officially confirmed amount, the deal signals a significant shift in the Angels’ governance. Moreno’s tenure, which began with a World Series win in 2002 and an MVP season for Vladimir Guerrero in 2004, has been marked by a long decline in performance. The incoming ownership group is viewed as a catalyst for addressing the infrastructure gaps that have hindered the franchise’s return to relevance.
