Jackson Koivun has seized control of the 2026 3M Open, holding a three-shot lead into the final round after a dominant third-round performance at TPC Twin Cities. The 21-year-old American carded a 10-under 61, driven by a 28 on the back nine, to finish the day at 20 under par. This result places him clear of Ben Kohles and Emiliano Grillo, who remain tied for second place at 17 under.
Koivun’s round was characterised by a shift in momentum after the turn. Having finished the front nine just one under par, he entered what he described as a flow state, securing back-to-back birdies at the ninth and 10th holes. The momentum continued with an eagle at the 12th, followed by birdies on the 13th, 16th, and 17th holes. He capped the round with an eagle on the par-5 18th, where he held a two-shot advantage entering the tee shot, ultimately extending his lead to four strokes before the round concluded.
The victory in the third round underscores Koivun’s rapid adaptation to professional golf. Arriving on the PGA Tour earlier this month with significant anticipation, the former Auburn Tiger has navigated the transition from amateur to professional status. His collegiate career was decorated, including leading Auburn to its second national title in three years, three Golfweek First-Team All-American honours, and over a year as the world’s top-ranked amateur. However, his professional start required adjustment; he missed the cut at his debut at the John Deere Classic before securing a top-10 finish at the ISCO Championship.
With this third professional start, Koivun appears increasingly comfortable on the tour. He acknowledged the challenge ahead, noting that the final round will likely feature tucked pins and strong competition. Despite the pressure, Koivun expressed confidence in his preparation, stating he intends to stick to his game plan. His performance has validated the high expectations placed upon him as one of the most hyped young players in recent PGA Tour history.
The field remains tightly packed behind the leader, with Michael Kim and Billy Horschel sitting at 15 under par. World number one Scottie Scheffler also remains in contention, finishing the day at 14 under to tie for ninth place after a strong back-nine 29. Scheffler’s presence ensures that the final round will be a rigorous test for Koivun, who must now defend his advantage against a group of seasoned professionals.
