Jones secures historic treble as WNBA All-Star weekend concludes in Chicago
Team Spoon defeats Team Coop 129-122 at United Center as league marks 30th season with record crowds and new milestones
Jonquel Jones has cemented her legacy in the Women’s National Basketball Association, becoming the first player in league history to secure Most Valuable Player awards for the regular season, Commissioner’s Cup, WNBA Finals, and the All-Star Game. The New York Liberty centre led Team Spoon to a 129-122 victory over Team Coop at the United Center in Chicago on Saturday night, recording 22 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists in 22 minutes of play.
The win at the United Center marked the culmination of the league’s 30th season, an event that drew record crowds and featured significant historical milestones. Jones, who also holds Most Improved Player and Sixth Player of the Year honours, dedicated her performance to her late aunt. Her victory was part of a balanced offensive effort by Team Spoon, which was assembled by WNBA legends Cynthia Cooper and Teresa Weatherspoon.
Other notable achievements were recorded throughout the evening. Nneka Ogwumike of the Los Angeles Sparks scored 11 points to surpass Maya Moore’s previous record of 119 career points in All-Star Games, finishing with 127 points in total. Additionally, Dominique Malonga of Team Coop executed a first-half dunk, the first in an All-Star Game since Sylvia Fowles in 2022, drawing a significant reaction from the crowd.
Caitlin Clark and Olivia Miles also delivered standout performances for Team Spoon. Clark, who had been absent from the previous year’s game due to injury, scored 11 of Team Spoon’s first 13 points, finishing with 17 points and five assists. Miles, the only rookie in the All-Star Game, contributed 11 points on perfect shooting, 12 rebounds, and eight assists, further strengthening her case for Rookie of the Year.
Side competitions earlier in the weekend highlighted emerging talent and international stars. Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd won the 3-point contest, becoming the first rookie to claim the trophy. In the Shooting Stars competition, Team Washington, featuring high school prospect Jezelle "GG" Banks, secured the victory with a final score of 31 points.
