Japan Meteorological Agency issues disaster warning after intense rainfall in Toyama

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a "Recorded Short-Duration Heavy Rain" warning for the area surrounding Nanto Town in Toyama Prefecture, following radar analysis that indicates approximately 100 millimetres of intense rainfall occurred within a single hour. The alert, effective as of 2:30 am on 27 July 2026, was triggered by the agency’s assessment that the risk of sudden disasters, including landslides and flooding, is imminent.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the classification of "Recorded Short-Duration Heavy Rain" is applied when rainfall intensity reaches levels capable of causing immediate disaster, even if the total daily precipitation volume is not historically high. The agency noted that the rainfall figure is an estimate derived from radar analysis rather than direct gauge measurement, yet it remains sufficient to warrant the highest level of caution for local authorities and residents.

This weather event is occurring within a broader regional pattern characterised by a line-shaped precipitation band affecting the Chūbu region. The Japan Meteorological Agency has identified this linear rainband as a primary driver for the intense, localized downpours, which are compounding existing severe weather alerts in neighbouring prefectures.

Concurrent with the Toyama warning, Niigata Prefecture has already escalated its disaster response protocols. The Niigata Regional Meteorological Observatory issued Level 4 Heavy Rain and Landslide Disaster Warnings for Itoigawa City at 00:26 on 27 July 2026, following the confirmation of similar rainfall volumes in that municipality. Additionally, Level 4 warnings have been extended to Nagaoka City, Kashiwazaki City, and Kariwa Village in Niigata Prefecture.

Under the Japanese disaster warning system, a Level 4 alert signifies a very high risk of landslides and necessitates strict vigilance and immediate safety actions, such as evacuation. While the Japan Meteorological Agency has not yet reported specific infrastructure damage or casualties in Nanto Town, the alignment of these alerts across Toyama and Niigata suggests a coordinated regional threat requiring urgent attention from civil defence authorities.
