Japan issues highest disaster alerts as heavy rain and heat strain Hokuriku and western regions

The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued strict warnings for landslides and flooding in the Hokuriku region and other areas following intense, localized rainfall caused by moist air. Authorities are also monitoring dangerous heat conditions, particularly in western Japan, and warning of atmospheric instability across a wide area from Tohoku to Kyushu on July 27.
Approximately 100 millimetres of intense rain was recorded in a one-hour period near Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture, and near Nanto Town, Toyama Prefecture, as of 2:30 am on July 27. The severity of these rainfall volumes has prompted the agency to classify the event as a recorded short-duration heavy rain, indicating a high probability of imminent disaster.
In response to the radar-confirmed rainfall severity, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a “Recorded Short-Duration Heavy Rain” warning for Itoigawa City, Niigata Prefecture. This specific classification underscores the immediate risk posed by the intensity of the precipitation, which has overwhelmed local drainage and soil stability in the affected municipalities.
Level 4 Heavy Rain and Landslide Disaster Warnings are currently in effect for Itoigawa City, Nagaoka City, Kashiwazaki City, and Kariwa Village in Niigata Prefecture. Under Japan’s disaster warning system, Level 4 indicates that a major disaster is imminent, requiring residents to take immediate evacuation or life-saving actions to ensure safety.
Concurrently, authorities are monitoring dangerous heat conditions, particularly in western Japan. The Japan Meteorological Agency has also issued warnings regarding atmospheric instability across a wide area from Tohoku to Kyushu on July 27, highlighting the dual threat of extreme weather events impacting different regions of the country simultaneously.
