Iran warns of retaliation after Caspian Sea strike on commercial vessel
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accuses Israel of provoking the attack, while Ukraine maintains it targeted Russian military assets and Iranian-linked cargo.
Iran has issued a stark warning to Ukraine that a recent attack on a commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea will not be met with silence, accusing Israel of orchestrating the incident to draw Europe into its regional conflicts. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the strike as a violation of the United Nations Charter and confirmed he had raised the matter during diplomatic calls with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, resulted in the explosion of the Iranian commercial vessel, killing one sailor and injuring several others, according to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In response, Iranian lawmakers and officials have summoned Ukraine’s charge d’affaires in Tehran to protest what they have termed a “hostile and criminal act”. Ebrahim Azizi, head of parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, stated on Monday that Ukraine could face retaliation, characterising the attack as “miscalculated” and noting that Tehran does not allow such actions to go unanswered.
Ukraine has denied involvement in the Russia-Ukraine conflict but stated it targeted a Russian warship and vessels transporting Iranian-linked military cargo in the Caspian Sea. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed on social media that the long-range strikes achieved “very strong results”, including against ships used for military cargo shipments involving Iran. He further accused Russia of supplying Iran with military support and noted active Russian satellite surveillance of Gulf states and US military facilities since July.
The diplomatic fallout has drawn in Moscow, with Lavrov offering condolences over the death of the sailor. The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Araghchi thanked local authorities in Russia’s Astrakhan region for assisting the crew. Lavrov urged an end to such “adventures by the Kyiv regime” and noted that Araghchi had informed him of ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalating tension in the Middle East.
Tensions between the two nations have been simmering since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in 2022, with Kyiv accusing Tehran of aiding Moscow’s air attacks by supplying thousands of Shahed drones. Conversely, Iran has consistently stated it has never intervened in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Ukraine has previously expressed solidarity with Middle Eastern countries targeted by Tehran, deploying military personnel to Gulf states to help intercept drones.
