Iran holds to Hormuz conditions as it awaits US response
Tehran says it has not received a definitive rejection through Qatari mediators after Donald Trump publicly dismissed its seven-day proposal.
Iran says it will maintain its conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz while awaiting Washington’s formal position. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran had heard US President Donald Trump’s public rejection but had received no definitive response through Qatari mediators.
The proposal, which Iran said it sent to Washington through Qatar, sought an end to hostilities across the Middle East, including in Lebanon. Araghchi said it also required terms from an earlier ceasefire deal: the release of frozen Iranian assets, lifting sanctions on Iranian oil and ending the US naval blockade.
Trump rejected the proposal publicly on Saturday. Araghchi said Iran would decide how to proceed after mediators conveyed the US position.
The Persian Gulf Strait Authority, established by Iran to manage the waterway, warned ships against routes it considers illegal. It said breaches could create financial and safety risks and lead to restrictions on future passage for vessels belonging to the company.
The strait remains largely shut to international shipping, according to Deutsche Welle’s report. Before the war, around a fifth of global oil demand passed through it; the route also carries liquefied natural gas and fertiliser.
