ICE shooting in Maine marks ninth death linked to Trump immigration crackdown

A 26-year-old Colombian national was killed in Biddeford, Maine, following an encounter with agents from US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), according to state officials. Maine House Speaker Ryan Fecteau confirmed the fatal shooting involved federal immigration agents, marking the ninth death linked to encounters with federal immigration officials since President Donald Trump launched an intensified immigration crackdown.
Senator Angus King reported that Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated the agent opened fire after the man attempted to use his vehicle as a weapon against agents pursuing him for deportation. King noted that the agents involved did not have body-worn cameras, a detail that has drawn attention amid calls for greater transparency in federal enforcement operations.
Advocacy groups, including the Maine Immigrants’ Rights Coalition and Presente!, identified the victim as a 26-year-old from Colombia who was authorised to work in the United States and held a Social Security number. Project Relief, another immigrant rights group, confirmed the death of a community member and stated it was in contact with the victim’s family, calling for justice and support for those affected by the incident.
The shooting occurred amid a significant surge in ICE activity in the state. Internal data shared with Reuters indicates that ICE arrests in Maine have more than quadrupled to approximately 70 per day in early July, following a rise in enforcement actions since the beginning of June. Maine Governor Janet Mills confirmed she was briefed on the incident and stated that state authorities are working with federal authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
This event follows a recent ICE shooting in Texas, where officials stated the man shot was not the intended target during a vehicle stop. The fatal incident in Biddeford adds to a growing list of deaths linked to federal immigration enforcement, including the killings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good in Minnesota. ICE did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and Biddeford police referred inquiries to the federal agency.
